Even after Father Damien Kerras killed himself, he was alive. Because of some demonic trickery, a vengeful spirit entered his body, escaped from his casket, and wandered into a mental ward in order to repair Damien's jellied brain.
It took FIFTEEN YEARS.
When his brain finally returned to it's original state, the demonic spirit had obviously weakened, giving Damien the chance to attempt control over his own body. And what does he do? He tries to EXORCISE A SPIRIT FROM HIS OWN BODY. Unforutunately, he doesnt get past "Save your servant".
For the rest of 'The Exorcist III', Damien unfortunately takes a back seat to a spirit who uses his body as a base to perform horiffic and disturbed killings. The end of the movie is much different than the book, but it does reiterate what I think the underlying message of The Exorcist has always been: Father Kerras kicks ass.
A priest by the name of Father Morning visits 'Kerras's cell and attempts an exorcism. He somehow manages through most of the ritual before he's tossed against the ceiling and has his skin ripped off. Kinderman, who's just narrowly saved from the Killer's spirit by this exorcism, wanders into the cell a minute or so later, only to be confronted with the same fate as Father Morning.
Father Morning can take plenty of shit, too. Even with only half his skin, he can still raise a crucifix into the air and wake up Kerras's own spirit.
"Shoot now, Bill! Shoot me now-"
Yep. Damien Kerras took control of his own body long enough for Lieutenant Bill Kinderman to put four right in his chest. Kerras's final lines before he gets his head blown off, as well as the final lines of the movie are as follows.
"We won, Bill. Now free me."
