Alright, everyone. Movie lecture time.

There are two movies out there with similar premises. Even though one came before the other, they're both original enough to warrant a viewing. But, what if you only have the abilitly/montery supply/willpower to enjoy ONE? WEll, my friends, allow me to help you out.

These two movies in question are 'Memento' and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'.

Both tell a good percentage of the main story backwards. But they are, despite this, very different movies.

Now, while I personally preffer Eternal Sunshine, Memento is just fantastic. I dont think I've seen such an effective mystery played out onscreen in a while, not only in the timeline as presented in the movie, but also the timeline in the movie's world.
Memento is a revenge story that stars a man with short-term memory loss. Meaning, he has no idea what happened much more than fifteen minutes ago. The only way to really pull the audience into this world was to play the movie's scenes in reverse order, and that's exactly what Christopher Noland did. Definitely the darker of the two movies.

Eternal Sunshine is a romantic comedy. A romantic comedy I ENJOYED, at that. Though it borrows heavily from 'Memento', it has plenty of interesting differences.
1) The main character is aware that the events are unfolding backwards.
2) There's a better reference point-a part of the story actually happening during the 'process' that the main character is going through.
3) Jim Carrey not sucking.
The world of the main character's mind is brought to life vividly. Bright colors, interesting scene transitions, and yes, SPOTLIGHTS all add to the surreality of the fading memories.
